If you have any questions about Purple Salsa, they might be answered below - if not, please do
get in touch!
- What shoes should I wear?
Any comfortable shoes are fine for the first few weeks - just don't wear flip flops, or other shoes that might fall off! Turning is more difficult in rubber-soled shoes, but that won't matter when you first start, so even trainers are ok. Stilletto-type heels aren't much fun, but a bit of a heel is ok!
- What about clothes - what do people usually wear?
Anything and everything is the simple answer! Some people like to dress up a bit with a dress/smart trousers and a fancy top, others turn up in their jeans. We're more the jeans-types ourselves, but even we make an effort occasionally! As long as you are reasonably cool and comfy, anything will do.
- Do I have to come every week?
No - the classes are self-contained each week, meaning that you can miss a week and still slot back into it all again. Having said that, if you only turn up very occasionally, it will take a long time to develop your dancing skills!
- I've never done any dancing before - is there a class for me?
There is an Absolute Beginners class (level 0) at 7.45pm every week, specifically designed for people who've never done any salsa before. You can turn up any week to this class (the Absolute Beginners class always assumes no salsa knowledge) - and lots of people do this class more than once to get the most out of it.
- When do the classes start?
There are two sets of classes, with start times as follows:
7.45pm - Absolute Beginners (level 0) and Intermediates (level 3)
8.45pm - Beginners (level 1) and Improvers (level 2)
So your start time will depend on which class/es you want to do on the night. We do try to be reasonably prompt with our start times, so make sure you leave enough time to get there!
- What time should I arrive?
You'll need to arrive 10-15 minutes before the class you want to do. Class times are:
7.45pm - Absolute Beginners (level 0) and Intermediates (level 3)
8.45pm - Beginners (level 1) and Improvers (level 2)
And on your first night, make sure you leave enough time to find the place - you'll find details of directions here!
- Can I come on my own - or do I need to bring a partner?
You can definitely come on your own - we move round partners in the classes, and everybody dances with everybody else during the general dancing afterwards!
- What's the age range - will I be the oldest/youngest?
Variously, we have people between the ages of (approximately - we haven't asked!!) 10 and 70ish. Salsa seems to appeal to people of all ages! If you are hoping to come along with younger people (under 14s), please just give us a call first (0118 977 5167) to talk about how the evening works, as it may not be right for all young people.
- When should I move up to the next class?
There are definitely no hard and fast rules about this! Have a look at our class levels information, but best of all, come and talk to us to discuss this. We always say we don't want you to be bored in a class, but moving up too early is very frustrating for you if you're not ready!
- It's my first night - which classes should I do?
If you've never done any dancing before, come along to the Absolute Beginners class at 7.45pm. After that, you may feel it's going well enough to brave the Beginners class, or you may want to rest a while and wait for the general dancing after the classes, if you can't take on board any more information!
- I've done some salsa/other dancing before - which class should I be in?
It really depends how much you've done, and what style of salsa/other dancing you've done before. The best things to do are to have a look at our class levels information, or to give us a call (0118 977 5167) to discuss this.
- I've not been before - can I turn up any week?
Yes, the classes do not 'follow on' from each other week on week, so it's fine to start whenever suits you. For complete beginners, there's a new Absolute Beginners class each week, so you can start at any time.
Remember, feel free to
get in touch if we haven't answered your question - or even if we have but you want to hear it from the horse's mouth!
